چکیده

We present a coloring method that conveys spatial relations between DTI fiber tracts effectively; similar tracts are assigned to similar colors and different tracts are assigned to different colors in a smooth and continuous manner. To this end, we combine a standard spectral approach with a mass-spring heuristic to embed fiber tracts into a perceptually uniform color space, L*a*b*. We also introduce a new geometric bivariate coloring model, the flat torus, that allows finer adjustment of coloring arbitrarily. Results indicate that our method allows a quick evaluation of tract projections and facilitate demarcation of subtle anatomical divisions in fiber tracts.

Methods to Improve Fiber Reconstruction at DTI-Based Tractography in the Area of Brain Tumor: Case Illustration and Literature Review

Background and Aim: DTI-based tractography could help us to visualize the spatial relation of fiber tracts to brain lesions. Several factors may interfere with the procedure of diffusion-based tractography, especially in brain tumors. The aim of the current study is to discuss several solutions to improve the procedure of fiber reconstruction adjacent or inside brain lesions. Illustrative cases...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

DTI registration in atlas based fiber analysis of infantile Krabbe disease

In recent years, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has become the modality of choice to investigate white matter pathology in the developing brain. To study neonate Krabbe disease with DTI, we evaluate the performance of linear and non-linear DTI registration algorithms for atlas based fiber tract analysis. The DTI scans of 10 age-matched neonates with infantile Krabbe disease are mapped into an a...

Improving perception of brain structure using fiber clustering

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an emerging technique inmagnetic resonance imaging. Recently, it has been the object of increased interest in neuroscience applications seeking to image brain fiber tracts. Examples are the identification of major white matter tracts in the human brain afflicted by a specific pathology or those particularly at risk for a given surgical approach. Based on DTI da...

Hierarchical Density-Based Clustering of White Matter Tracts in the Human Brain

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) provides a promising way of estimating the neural fiber pathways in the human brain non-invasively via white matter tractography. However, it is difficult to analyze the vast number of resulting tracts quantitatively. Automatic tract clustering would be useful for the neuroscience community, as it can contribute to accurate neurosurgical plannin...
